Breathing and Nitric Oxide: The Miracle Molecule You Might Not Have Heard Of

Nitric oxide, a simple gas molecule, plays a vital role in numerous bodily functions, including immune response, cardiovascular health, and respiratory function. Discovered in the 1990s, this molecule is now recognised for its potential to improve overall health and longevity.

The Benefits of Nitric Oxide

* Cardiovascular Health: Nitric oxide relaxes blood vessels, reducing blood pressure and improving blood flow to vital organs. This can help prevent heart attacks and strokes.

* Respiratory Health: It helps to relax the airways in the lungs, making breathing easier. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma.

* Immune System: Nitric oxide plays a crucial role in fighting infections by killing bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Nitric oxide has the capacity to neutralise certain bugs that can lead to ill-health. Recent research suggests it may even have a role in combating COVID-19.

* Cognitive Function: Some studies suggest that nitric oxide may improve cognitive function, including memory and focus.

Boosting nitric oxide levels naturally using the breath....

Nasal Breathing: Breathing through the nose, rather than the mouth, increases nitric oxide production. This simple practice can significantly improve overall health. In yoga, we are reminded to use the nose to breathe for several reasons, one of which is to increase nitric oxide production. Other reasons why we are encouraged to breathe through the nose is 1) to slow the breath down, and 2) to control our nervous system response. Just as a side note, the nose actually has 30 different functions that help us stay healthy.

Humming: Humming can significantly increase nitric oxide levels in the nasal passages, making humming a simple way to boost your health. In yoga, we can breathe in through the nose, and "hum" the exhale, creating a simple pranayama that boosts levels of nitric oxide in the nostrils. A well know yoga breathing technique or practise called Bhramari Pranayama, or "Bee Breath," significantly increases nitric oxide levels and improves respiratory function.

By incorporating these simple practices into your daily routine or yoga practice, you can harness the power of nitric oxide and improve your overall health and well-being.

Dr Rhys Bullman

"I thought stiff joints were  just part of ageing, but when I began to struggle with simply bending down and doing my shoelaces up, I knew I had to do something. I found yoga, and have never looked back. Lucy-Ann's classes are both challenging and wonderfully satisfying. Her teaching, and attention to all her students is commendable."
