
There is nothing like the energy, connection and comradery of a live yoga class, whatever the style of yoga or level of class. Yoga classes provide opportunities to connect with other people who are also interested in yoga or simply health and wellness. This can lead to new friendships and social connections, enhancing your overall well-being. In-studio classes also have the number one benefit of having the teacher there, not just leading and instructing students but observing, adjusting, and teaching to the level of the students present. This teacher-student dynamic is absent when practising or exercising at home with a video.
I do my best, as a yoga teacher, to foster a community where each individual feels valued and supported and learns something valuable - or many things. I come to every class that I teach with energy, enthusiasm and passion.
Every class will begin with a warm greeting and either a short introduction to the theme or content of the class or an intention-setting moment that invites students to connect with themselves and each other. You will be guided into a short meditation, learn how to breathe and set the breath for the rest of the class. Following an opening section and "warm-up" flow, such as a sun salutation (or variation of it), the main asana practice (physical postures) will begin - a mix of standing and balancing poses. Each class is slightly different, with some new poses or variations and repetitive elements too. As you progress with your yoga practice, you will appreciate and enjoy each class and how it touches all the different dimensions of the human body and mind. There is just something about yoga that is different to all other forms of movement and exercise.
Please understand that the aim of yoga is not to achieve a certain posture or postures. It is not a competition. The aim of yoga is to build a deep body awareness, to practise kindness and compassion, to learn to calm a busy mind, learn to breathe to live, not live to breathe and to learn about every part of yourself. The fitness, strength, mobility and balance you cultivate from a regular yoga practice is simply a wonderful side-effect of all that.
Will my first yoga class feel challenging?
Parts of it, yes, absolutely. But it will also feel, deep down, exactly what you need. If I notice that you are struggling, I will offer gentle encouragement, a modification or extra support so that you feel included and comfortable. Conversely, if I see you are trying hard and excelling at something, I will most likely point that out to you and might even high-5 you.... just kidding. Believe me, you will be inspiring others with your efforts and commitment and, at the same time, giving me a huge sense of pride. I try my best to balance individual attention with collective instruction and cueing to create a dynamic where everyone feels acknowledged and empowered.
My aim as a yoga teacher will always be to create a vibrant and supportive yoga community, welcoming new students and old ones and always expressing deep gratitude to those regular, committed participants.
